Greenock's custom house undergoes £1.8m transformation

22nd January 2014

The east wing of the building has been transformed into chic office space which is set to be snapped up by three leading companies.
Urban regeneration outfit Riverside Inverclyde (RI) commissioned the work, carried out by Clark Contracts, and bosses gave the Telegraph an exclusive tour of the revamped building.
The revamped two-storey wing offers eight office suites, with three on the ground and five on the first floor.
They are let out pending the signing of a final lease agreement.
The new-look building has been opened up and brought back to its former glory but also has a contemporary black and white theme throughout.
Original features such as historic fireplaces and cornicing sit side-by-side with hi-tech touches like suspended bar lighting, underfloor sockets, a lift, and intercom access.
A false floor on the first floor has been removed to reveal a stunning atrium, and the main entrance has been moved to what was once the back door at Custom House Place.
RI’s interim chief executive Aubrey Fawcett said: “Riverside Inverclyde’s strategic purchase of the Custom House prevented this iconic building from falling into disrepair.
“The completion of our first phase refurbishment of the east wing for multiple occupancy office use has attracted great interest.
“We’re confident that this will add to the economic growth of Inverclyde, and the continued success of RI’s strategy of bringing regeneration and jobs to the waterfront.”
The Tele revealed last August that major electronics firm Toshiba and IBM were poised to move into the historic building.
Neil Lochiel, RI implementation manager, today confirmed that talks are now at an advanced stage with prospective tenants, with the new office space expected to be fully let.
