04 February 2010

Nicola Laird from Hamilton is the first ever winner of the Alan Calder Memorial Prize for part time students of quantity surveying at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Nicola Laird aged 32, said, “It is an honour to receive this prestigious award and I am looking forward to developing my career further in Quantity Surveying. I would like to thank everyone for their support over the past five years and thank my employer for sponsoring and supporting me throughout my studies which have led to this fantastic achievement.”

Presenting Nicola with the trophy, Gordon Cunningham, Managing Director, Clark Contracts, who, in his earlier career, was employed by Alan as an assistant surveyor, said, “Alan was a great mentor, colleague and friend to many of us here at Clark Contracts and we all miss his professionalism, enthusiasm and genuine concern for others. His personal commitment to the development of young people in the surveying profession was well respected throughout the industry and we believe this Memorial Prize is a fitting tribute to his memory.”

The Alan Calder Memorial Prize will be awarded annually, in November each year.

The Award has been established by Clark Contracts where Alan held a senior management position at the time of his passing, aged 58, in January 2008. A Chartered Quantity Surveyor, he had a long, highly successful career in the building industry.
