Two Clark Contracts employees, along with 50 other cyclists, took part in the ‘Five Ferries’ cycling challenge on Saturday 13th June 2015.

The event was organised by Steven Irvine, Laing O’Rourke, Tony Curran, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Calum MacCalman, Archial Norr to raise money for Rothesay based charity, Calum’s Cabin.

Calum’s Cabin is a charity set up by Caroline and Duncan Speirs, parents of Rothesay boy, Calum Speirs, who died 13 months after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. Calum and his family wanted to create a place where other children and their families who are dealing with cancer could come for a break away and respite. Read more about the charity here.

Clark Contracts provided two vans and two drivers who accompanied the cyclists as support vehicles carrying food, water and emergency bike repair equipment.

The cycle included two options for cyclists, either the tough and challenging 100 mile cycle or shorter second option which was a 60 mile route. The 100 mile participants kicked off at 8am from Wemyss Bay with the 60 milers starting their cycle at 1pm from the same location. Following a quick lunch stop at the Port Bahn Holiday Park Café for the 100 mile cyclists the two groups made their way to Portavadie where they meet at the marina to complete the remainder of the route to Calum’s Cabin together.

After presenting the cheque to Calum’s Cabin, the cyclists made their way to a local pub for a fish and chips dinner before heading back to the ferry terminal at Rothesay to make their way home after a long days cycling.

At the time of publication, the charity event has raised over £20k which will allow the charity to continue to support families with children suffering from cancer.
